Textile Terrors: The Revenge of Turtlezilla

Introducing

Textile Terrors: The Revenge of Turtlezilla

Prompt excerpt: 'A giant turtle that feeds on human cities' Medium: Collage and video

"This artwork is the final submission from the artist Alanna Wilcox for the 'Humanity' event by the Faerian gallery. The artist created this piece in 3 days, inspired by a prompt that was submitted by the public. In a unique twist, instead of being interpreted by an AI, this time the prompt was brought to life by a human artist. The entire creative process was livestreamed online and at the NFC Lisboa event.

Original prompt text: -- 'A giant turtle that feeds on human cities'

Art Medium: -- AI art for the base layers were then modified by cropping and collaging them into separate layers. The layers were then fed through Motionleap to animate them. After each layer was animated, a green screen was used to make the layers transparent to create a sense of depth. Sound effects were superimposed in Canva to bring the cinematic quality of the piece together.

Was AI used? -- Yes, I don't really know how to quantify the ratio. I took AI elements that I generated and collaged them, animated them, and composed them with additional graphics.

How is your final artwork related to the prompt? -- Uhm, it's a giant turtle that is feeding on a human city? :)

Why did you choose this prompt? -- Because I liked the playful nature of it and it gave me creative freedom to imagine how a giant turtle feeding on a human city might look.

Explain more your creative process: -- With my AI art I like to be playful and utilize textile words to bring my background as a fiber artist into my digital art. After creating the turtle I was trying to imagine a perspective that would make it appear giant/larger than life. I thought for scale having a living room view of the turtle attacking would be the perfect framing for it. I then generated a couch and the girl, the bay window the houses in the foreground and the background. I really wanted the piece to be animated and explored different effects/movements in Motionleap. Unfortunately I wasn't able to manipulate each of the elements in isolation with regard to the animation so I had to learn how to use Davinci Resolve and creating a green screen to bring this vision to life. I guess my inspiration was the prompt and my imagination and love of stop motion animation films. I also enjoy making people laugh, so I hope my take on the prompt brings a smile to the prompter's face :)
