Coral Reefers

Coral Reefers is a collection of 4,500 carbon neutral, generative, evolving digital artwork — unique digital collectables living on the Ethereum blockchain that evolves over time and raises money to restore real-life coral reefs. The Coral Reefers collection has five base forms on three different backgrounds - white, black and off-white. Each Coral Reefers transforms over a six-week period or seven generations of growth. At the fourth generation of growth, a rarity trait will appear on random Coral Reefers.

Coral reefs are in of themselves incredible works of art. And like the world’s finest art, they hold tremendous value. Coral reefs are valued at up to $2.7 trillion annually. An estimated 1 billion people rely on the survival of coral reefs that provide an estimated $6 billion in coastal protection and support 25% of all life in the ocean. Coral reefs generate $36 billion in tourism revenue, and support the livelihood for half a million people.

We have lost over half the world’s coral reefs. What remains is under threat by rising ocean temperatures and local stressors, including a tidal wave of plastic pollution. At today’s rate, it is predicted that ninety percent of the world’s reefs will disappear by 2050. Project Zero, creator of Coral Reefers, has set out to protect Earth’s most climate resistant reefs and thwart extinction. 100% of funds from the Coral Reefers collection restores real world coral reefs in Costa Rica in both the Pacific and Caribbean oceans via Raising Coral.

Project Zero worked with 3D artist Alex Rutterford to create the collection. To better connect people to often remote parts of the world, Alex used a human profile form on which he created digitally imagined coral. Each Coral Reefers artwork contains layers of digital coral that was inspired by real coral growths, in various colors and textures.

Project Zero enlisted OG Art, creators of some of the world's most exciting generative art today, to create the smart contracts for the generative journey. Coral Reefers holders can motivate their Reefer to grow faster by attending events and voting in Project Zero's Discord room called The Cave, a gated space for Reefer holders. Reefer holders are invited to attend live events - like our NFT:NYC event on April 13 - as well as receive $PZero social tokens and more - but best of all, each Reefer holder is helping to do real world good.
