A touching tale from the 'Storytime' collection. Created by Lewie
He wasn’t quite certain anymore but Chigaru believed it true that he was ‘a regular person’ when he was first exiled. It had been a long time now, decades in fact, and he could not even exactly remember why he was forced to leave the village; home to his family and the place he once lovingly belonged. The very fact that he still existed, of itself, was a kind of miracle. He had been to hell and back since being banished to the desolate plains - and seen devastation and destruction, natural and otherwise - so, he wouldn’t call it the good kind of miracle. Many times, he wished he was no longer. But a tiny fraction of hope lived on inside him. Hope to see his wife and children again. Hope to be accepted back by his people. This far down the track, he knew the chances were infinitesimally small, and yet, that sliver seemingly could not be eradicated.
He had witnessed and survived floods and droughts, famine, and wars. He felt no sense of accomplishment for having endured hardships far beyond what most ever could, or would, experience. These days he felt very little at all. Perhaps, it was better that way.
